I review some of the results presented in the working group on diffraction at DIS97, with a particular emphasis on the theory of diffractive hard scattering.

Are Charm and High-p ⊥ Jets the Keys to Understanding Diffraction in Dis ? *
Following an introduction which explains some basic ideas about diffraction, the semiclassical approach to diffraction in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) is outlined. Some phenomenological tests of this picture, concerning the p ⊥ and mass spectra of open charm and jet production are given.
متن کاملDiffractive Dis: Where Are We?
A brief review of the modern QCD theory of diffractive DIS is given. The recent progress has been remarkably rapid, all the principal predictions from the color dipole approach to diffraction-the (Q 2 +m 2 V) scaling, the pattern of SCHNC, shrinkage of the diffraction cone in hard diffractive DIS, the strong impact of longitudinal gluons in inclusive J/Ψ production at Tevatron-, have been confi...

Around 10% of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) events observed at HERA at small value of the Bjorken variable x are diffractive events [1, 2], when the incoming proton stays intact losing only a small fraction xIP of its initial momentum. A large rapidity gap is formed between the scattered proton (or its low mass excitation) and the diffractive system. The ratio of diffractive to total DIS cros...

Let us dream of e-Uranium DIS at THERA at Q ∼ 10 GeV and x ∼ 10. Violent DIS is associated with complete destruction of the target, deposition of a mere dozen MeV energy breaks the uranium nucleus entirely, yet a rigorous prediction from unitarity is that diffractive DIS eU → eXU with the target nucleus emerging intact in the ground state will make≈ 50% of total DIS ! By the Glauber-Gribov theo...
متن کاملRescattering Effects on Dis Parton Distributions
Rescattering of the struck quark in Deep Inelastic Scattering implies that measured parton distributions are not directly related to the Fock state probabilities of the target wave function. The production amplitudes acquire dynamical phases, which gives rise to shadowing and diffraction in DIS.
